PAINT & REFINISHING
Factory Color Match in a Dedicated Spray Booth
Many drivers who come to our Broomfield shop thinking they need a new panel leave with a refinish instead. Scrape damage on door and quarter panels, deep scratches from keys, rock chips from I-25 that have started rusting, peeling clear coat from Colorado sun exposure, bumper scuffs from the Flatiron Crossing parking lot. We address all of it daily.
Where bare metal has been exposed, moisture reaches it fast and oxidation begins. In Broomfield's climate that process moves quickly. A refinish done correctly with proper products protects the panel from whatever the environment does to it next. Waiting turns a refinish job into a panel replacement.
After hail damage, some panels need refinishing to blend the repaired surface back to the surrounding paint. After a dent is pulled, if the finish requires work to match correctly, the paint goes on in our dedicated spray booth with the same process used on a full panel refinish. Butch personally oversees all complex paint work and has done so for more than 30 years. Call (303) 466-6717.

THE REPAIR
How We Match and Apply Your Paint
Color matching is where most paint jobs go wrong. Getting it right requires the correct equipment, the right process and the willingness to not rush any step.
Spectrophotometer Color Matching
We scan the color of every vehicle before mixing a single drop of paint. A spectrophotometer reads the exact color your vehicle is now, not the color it left the factory as. A car that has been parked outside in Broadlands for eight years is not the same color as one kept in a garage. We match to current color, mix the formula and test on panels under fluorescent, natural and LED lighting before touching your vehicle.
Dedicated Downdraft Spray Booth
All paint work is performed in a fully enclosed downdraft spray booth. This protects the finish from dust, debris and contamination during application. Paint is applied in multiple layers: primer, basecoat and clearcoat. Each layer cures fully before the next begins. Rushing that sequence produces peeling, orange peel texture or inconsistent color. We do not take shortcuts. Butch has overseen this process in Broomfield for over 30 years.
Wet Sand, Buff and Blend
After the final clearcoat cures, every newly painted panel is wet sanded and buffed so the new finish blends smoothly into the original paint. The transition should be invisible. You should not be able to tell where the new paint begins. We walk you around the vehicle before you leave and show you exactly what was done. If anything looks off, we address it before you drive away.
BROOMFIELD, CO
Why Paint Quality Matters More in Broomfield
Broomfield's environment is harder on vehicle paint than most owners realize. Proper refinishing here is protective, not just cosmetic.
Altitude means higher UV exposure year-round. At over 5,300 feet Broomfield receives significantly more intense sun than lower-elevation cities. The UV load that reaches your vehicle's clear coat here is enough to degrade it faster than most manufacturers' estimates account for. We see consistent clear coat failure along hoods and roofs on vehicles that have been outside in Broadlands for a few seasons. Once the clear coat fails the base coat is next.
Hail chips paint even when it does not dent metal. Small hail that leaves sheet metal unaffected still chips paint and cracks clear coat. Those small chips are entry points for water. Once water gets under the clear coat it oxidizes the metal. A minor paint chip becomes a bodywork and rust repair job if left untreated through a Broomfield winter.
Magnesium chloride from Midway Boulevard and 120th reaches paint chips fast. Winter road treatment is applied heavily on Broomfield's main roads. A rock chip from I-25 or US-36 exposes bare metal directly to that chemical. The freeze-thaw cycle that follows stresses the damaged paint edge further every time temperatures swing. We see chips that opened in fall become rust by March.
Clear coat failure is more common here than owners expect. The chalky white spots on a hood or trunk lid are clear coat degrading from UV exposure. It looks like a cosmetic issue from distance and reveals serious paint system failure up close. Addressing clear coat damage before it reaches the base coat is significantly less expensive than waiting.
Refinishing done correctly is protective coating, not just appearance. The International Institute of Collision Repair states that leaving paint damage untreated is one of the primary causes of accelerated body panel corrosion in high UV and high-elevation regions. A correct refinish with proper materials stops that process. Waiting until a scratch becomes a rust hole costs significantly more to repair.

THE PROCESS
What Happens From Surface Prep to Final Polish
Every paint and refinishing repair at SVE follows the same documented process. Nothing moves forward until the previous step is confirmed.
01
Assessment, Documentation and Color Scan
Tom walks you through the damage, documents every area that needs attention and scans the vehicle's current color using a spectrophotometer. Previous repair work or aftermarket paint on any panel is noted upfront so the approach accounts for what is underneath the current surface.
02
Surface Preparation and Priming
All affected panels are properly prepared. Previous paint, filler or corrosion is addressed before any new material goes on. Primer is applied and cured fully before basecoat begins. Rushing surface preparation is the most common reason refinishing work fails.
03
Basecoat, Clearcoat and Blending
Paint is applied in the dedicated downdraft spray booth in multiple layers with full cure time between each. After clearcoat the panel is wet sanded and buffed. The finish is blended into adjacent panels so the transition is invisible. Butch reviews all complex refinishing work before the vehicle moves to delivery.
04
Color Verification, Detail and Delivery
The finished paint is checked in natural Colorado sunlight and indoor shop lighting. The interior is fully detailed. Tom walks you through every painted panel at pickup, shows you the process photos and confirms the color match before you take the keys.

COMMON QUESTIONS
Collision Repair, Frequently Asked Questions
Real questions from real customers about collision repair in Broomfield.
What car damage is not repairable after a collision?
Most collision damage is repairable. The cases where a vehicle is considered a total loss involve structural damage so severe that the cost of repair exceeds the vehicle's value. That determination is made by your insurance company based on the repair estimate. SVE provides a full written estimate so you have accurate numbers before any decision is made. If the car is repairable we will tell you exactly what is involved and what the work covers.
Is it better to go to a dealership or an independent body shop for collision repair?
For most collision repairs an independent shop is the better choice. SVE is BMW certified which means we use OEM parts and manufacturer procedures on BMW and other vehicles, the same standard a dealership would apply. The difference is that we specialize in collision repair exclusively. Dealerships are generalists. We do one thing and have done it for 34 years.
What are the warning signs of a bad auto body repair?
Look for paint that does not match in direct sunlight, panel gaps that are uneven between doors and body panels, any rattling or wind noise that was not there before and dashboard warning lights that were not present before the repair. At SVE we run a multi-stage quality control check before calling you for pickup. Structural alignment is confirmed with computer measurement. Paint is checked under specialized light for texture and color differences. Tom walks you through the finished repair in person before you drive away.
What is the difference between an insurance DRP shop and an independent shop?
A DRP shop is one that has a preferred relationship with an insurance company. Those shops are sometimes steered toward cost-cutting measures that benefit the insurer rather than the vehicle owner. SVE is independent. We work directly with all major carriers but we answer to you, not to the insurance company. Our estimates reflect what the vehicle actually needs, not what an adjuster wants to approve.
What actually happens during a collision repair?
The vehicle is fully disassembled so we can see all damage including what is hidden behind panels. We document everything and coordinate directly with your insurance company on any additional findings. Structural repairs are completed first using OEM procedures. Body panels are repaired or replaced next. Then paint, reassembly and a full interior detail before delivery. Tom walks you through the repair at pickup and answers every question.
What should I look for when picking up my car from a body shop?
Run your hand along the repaired panels to feel for bumps or texture differences. Open and close every door, the hood and the trunk to confirm smooth operation and even gaps. Check all lights, cameras and sensors. Look at the paint in natural sunlight for color match. Your car should show no evidence that a repair took place. If anything is not right, raise it before you leave. SVE offers a lifetime guarantee on all collision repair workmanship.
How does the collision repair estimate process work?
Call (303) 466-6717 or submit a request through our online form. Tom will walk around the car with you and document the visible damage. We provide a written estimate before any work begins. Once the car is disassembled and we find the full extent of the damage we photograph everything and update the estimate. Any additional findings go directly to your insurance company. You are kept informed throughout.
COMMON QUESTIONS
Paint & Refinishing, Frequently Asked Questions
Real questions from Broomfield drivers about paint and refinishing.
How do you color match paint on a car that has faded over time?
YES
Factory paint codes alone are not enough. A car that has been outside in Broomfield for several years is not the same color it was when it left the factory. We use a spectrophotometer to scan the exact color your vehicle is right now before mixing anything. The formula is adjusted for current color, not original code. Test panels are sprayed and compared against your vehicle under fluorescent, natural and LED lighting before any paint goes on the car. A color that matches in one light and fails in another is a bad match. We test under all three before the vehicle goes into the booth.
Can you paint over existing automotive paint without stripping it?
YES
It depends on the condition of the existing paint. If the existing surface is properly adhered, clean and in good condition, new paint can be applied over it with correct preparation. If the existing paint has any adhesion failure, filler from a previous repair, rust or contamination underneath it, painting over it produces a result that will fail in the same way the underlying layer is already failing. We document any previous paint work or repairs on a panel before we begin so we know exactly what we are working over. If we find something underneath the surface that changes the approach we tell you before proceeding.
Is paint restoration better than full repainting?
YES
It depends on the extent of the damage. Paint restoration, which means cutting, polishing and applying a new clear coat layer, works on surfaces where the clear coat is intact but dull, swirled or lightly oxidized. Once the clear coat has actually failed or the base coat is compromised, restoration alone will not hold. Full refinishing with primer, basecoat and clearcoat in a spray booth is the correct repair for cracked clear coat, paint chips that have reached bare metal and panels that have experienced UV degradation down to the base coat. We assess every panel individually and recommend the right approach based on what we actually find.
How do I know if my car's paint job was done correctly at pickup?
YES
Stand three feet back from the painted panel and compare it to the panels on either side in full sunlight. The color, tone and metal flake direction should match across the transition with no visible shade difference. Run your hand across the surface. A correct refinish is glass smooth with no grit or texture variation. Check all edges. Open the doors and hood and look at the paint transition into door jambs. There should be no overspray on rubber seals, weatherstripping or trim. Crouch low and look across the surface in raking light for orange peel. A slight texture matching the factory finish is acceptable. More than the surrounding panels is not. At SVE Tom walks you through every painted panel before you take the keys and shows you the process photos from every stage of the repair.
How does Colorado's altitude affect automotive paint?
YES
Broomfield sits above 5,300 feet. UV radiation at elevation is significantly more intense than at sea level. Clear coat degrades faster here than manufacturer lifespan estimates assume. We consistently see clear coat failure on vehicles that have been parked outside in Broadlands and the Trails at Anthem for a few seasons. Chalky white spots along the hood, roof and trunk lid indicate UV damage to the clear coat layer. Once the clear coat fails the base coat is exposed. Paint chips that would stay localized at lower elevations rust out faster here because UV-compromised paint around the chip edge deteriorates quickly. Refinishing in Broomfield is protective, not just cosmetic. Getting it done correctly with UV-resistant clear coat stops that deterioration process.
Can an automotive body be repainted without sanding?
YES
No. Proper surface preparation is not optional. Paint adhesion depends on the mechanical bond between the new paint and the prepared surface. Skipping sanding produces a result where the new paint does not bond correctly and begins peeling or flaking within months. We see this on vehicles that come to us from previous shops where surface preparation was rushed. The fix requires removing the failed paint back to a properly prepared surface and starting the process correctly. Getting it done right the first time is less expensive than undoing it and doing it again. Every paint job at SVE begins with proper surface preparation regardless of how minor the repair appears.
