Hail Damage

Colorado Hail Season: What to Do in the First 48 Hours After a Storm

Colorado's Front Range averages 7 to 9 hailstorms per season. What you do immediately after a storm affects your repair and your coverage.

Colorado's Front Range is one of the most hail-prone regions in the United States. The area between Fort Collins and Colorado Springs sits inside what meteorologists call Hail Alley, where warm moist air from the Gulf collides with cold air from the Rockies and produces some of the most intense hailstorms in the country. Denver averages 7 to 9 hailstorms per season. In bad years the damage runs into the tens of thousands of dollars per vehicle.

When a storm hits, what you do in the first 48 hours affects how cleanly the repair goes and how much of it your insurance covers.

Step 1: Document Everything Before You Move the Car

Take photos of every panel. Hood, roof, trunk, all four doors and every piece of glass. Do this before the car moves. Take the photos in natural light, not a garage. Hail dents are subtle and easy to miss under artificial lighting. Date-stamped photos from immediately after the storm establish exactly what the storm caused versus what was pre-existing.

Step 2: File Your Claim Promptly

Most comprehensive policies cover hail damage with no fault designation and no effect on your rates in Colorado. Call your insurer or file online within 24 hours. Delays can complicate coverage, especially during a widespread storm event when adjusters are managing high volume. Keep your claim number in writing.

Step 3: Know What You Are Looking At

Hail damage is not always obvious. A storm that leaves clear dents on the hood may have left hairline cracks in the clear coat on vertical panels, compromised door seals or caused subtle damage to the roof that only shows under proper lighting. A professional inspection covers every panel methodically.

This is why hail damage estimates work differently from collision estimates. At SVE a hail damage inspection is $250 and covers every panel of the vehicle under proper shop lighting. That fee is fully credited toward your repair if you move forward with us. It is not a free estimate because a thorough hail inspection takes real time to do right. A missed dent in the estimate becomes a problem at the end of the repair.

Step 4: Understand Your Repair Options

Two methods handle hail damage depending on the severity.

Paintless Dent Repair (PDR) works on dents where the paint surface is intact. A technician uses specialized rods to push the metal back from behind the panel. The factory finish stays untouched. PDR is faster, less expensive and preserves the original paint, which matters for resale value.

Traditional panel repair is required when the paint is cracked, the metal is creased rather than dented or the damage is on a panel edge where PDR tools cannot reach. This involves filler, primer and a full repaint matched to your vehicle's color code.

A reputable shop will tell you which method applies and why. Be cautious of any shop that recommends only one method without inspecting the vehicle first.

Step 5: Do Not Sign Anything at the Storm Site

After a major Front Range storm, mobile repair vans and traveling PDR crews set up in parking lots and neighborhoods offering quick repairs. Some do good work. Many do not. Signing over your insurance assignment to a traveling crew before any inspection has happened means you have no control over what gets repaired or what gets billed to your insurer. Take your time. Choose a shop you can visit and hold accountable.

Step 6: Choose a Shop That Handles the Claim

A quality independent shop handles your insurance claim directly. They communicate with the adjuster, document the damage with the insurer and manage supplements if the adjuster missed something during the initial inspection. You should not be on the phone with your insurance company explaining what a PDR rod is.

SVE Autobody handles hail damage claims for Colorado drivers across Broomfield, Boulder, Northglenn, Westminster, Arvada, Erie, Louisville, Superior, Longmont and Golden. Our team coordinates directly with your insurer from the initial inspection through final approval.
